Hilal Baydarov was born in 1987 in Baku, Azerbaijan. During his high school years,\u00a0 he won the National Championship of Mathematics twice in 2004 and 2005. In 2011\u00a0 he led the Azeri team at the International Olympiad in Informatics. After graduating\u00a0 with a Master\u2019s degree in Computer Sciences, he left for Sarajevo to study film at\u00a0 Sarajevo Film Academy. He was a student under acclaimed Hungarian filmmaker B\u00e9la\u00a0 Tarr, who founded the film.factory school in Sarajevo. Baydarov\u2019s debut feature film\u00a0 HILLS WITHOUT NAMES, which he wrote and directed, premiered at the Montreal\u00a0 Film Festival in 2018. The same year, he won the Docu Talent Award at the Sarajevo\u00a0 Film Festival for his second documentary film BIRTHDAY. WHEN THE PERSIMMONS\u00a0 GREW, Baydarov\u2019s third documentary film, received the Interreligious Award and a\u00a0 Special Jury Mention when it premiered at the 2019 Visions du R\u00e9el film festival in\u00a0 Nyon and it won the Heart of Sarajevo for Best Documentary at the Sarajevo Film\u00a0 Festival. MOTHER AND SON, his fourth documentary film, premiered in the main\u00a0 competition at IDFA 2019 and NAILS IN MY BRAIN, his fifth documentary film, is the\u00a0 last film in the \u201cKatech\u201d trilogy of documen-taries set in Katech, Azerbaijan, which also\u00a0 includes MOTHER AND SON, and WHEN THE PERSIMMONS GREW. Baydarov\u2019s second\u00a0 feature, IN BETWEEN DYING will premiere in the main competition of the 2020 Venice\u00a0 Biennale Film Festival.<\/p>\n
